Convert Hangul (HWP/HWPX) documents
to Markdown

Drop an HWP or HWPX file and get Markdown that keeps its headings, tables and bold text. The file never leaves your browser. Free, no signup.

Drop a .hwp or .hwpx file onto the editor, or choose Open β†’ From file… to pick one.

Why convert with printmd?

No upload

Conversion runs entirely in your browser, so government and internal documents stay on your device.

Keeps the structure

Outline styles and large-font titles become headings, and tables become Markdown tables.

Ready for AI

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini struggle with HWP. Markdown gives them clean text to summarize and analyze.

Restyle as PDF

Apply one of 15 themes to the converted document and save it as a clean PDF or print it.

Three simple steps

1

Open the Hangul file

Drop a .hwp or .hwpx file onto the editor, or choose Open β†’ From file… to pick one.

2

Check the result

The Markdown opens in a new tab next to a live preview, ready for touch-ups.

3

Save or reuse it

Download it as .md, paste it into an AI chat, or style it and save as PDF.

What gets converted

Outline 1–7 styles β†’ headings (#)
Large-font titles β†’ headings
Numbered banner tables β†’ headings
Bold, italic and strikethrough
Tables β†’ Markdown tables
Single-cell box tables β†’ paragraphs
Line breaks
Images, embedded in the document
Text boxes β†’ paragraphs

Good to know

  • Markdown tables can't merge cells, so merged content goes in the top-left cell only.
  • Automatic outline numbers (1., a.) aren't stored as text in the file, so they're left out.
  • Images are embedded up to about 2 MB per document. Any that don't fit are left out, and you're told how many.
  • Distribution-only and password-protected documents can't be opened. Equations, charts and OLE objects are left out; everything else is converted.

When an HWP file won't open

  1. 1Open the document in Hancom Office Hangul. If it has a password, enter it and then remove the document password.
  2. 2Choose File β†’ Save As.
  3. 3In the file type list, pick the format ending in *.hwpx and save. This also works for old HWP 3.0 files.
  4. 4Drop the saved .hwpx file onto the printmd editor. Distribution-only documents can't be converted this way either.

When it helps

Feeding documents to AI

Turn announcements and policy reports into Markdown, then paste them into ChatGPT or Claude to summarize or ask questions.

Moving to Notion or Obsidian

Markdown pastes straight into Notion, Obsidian and GitHub.

Giving old documents a new look

Strip the Hangul formatting and produce a fresh PDF with a clean theme.

Version-controlling documents

Markdown is plain text, so Git can diff it and teams can edit it together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert HWP files too?+
Yes. Both .hwp files (HWP 5.0 and later) and .hwpx files are supported. Distribution-only and password-protected documents can't be opened; save HWP 3.0 and older files as HWPX in Hangul first.
Is my file uploaded to a server?+
No. HWP and HWPX files are read and converted inside your browser and never sent anywhere, so they're safe for government and internal documents.
How are tables and headings converted?+
Outline styles and short paragraphs set in a noticeably larger font become headings, and tables become Markdown tables. Single-cell box tables are unwrapped into paragraphs, and banner tables holding only a number and a title become headings.
Are images included?+
Yes. Images are embedded directly in the Markdown, and BMP images are re-encoded into a web format. Because of browser storage limits, up to about 2 MB of images is embedded per document.
How do I save the converted Markdown?+
Use Download in the editor header to get a .md file, or copy the text anywhere you like. You can also pick a theme and save it as PDF or print it.
Is it free?+
Yes. It's free with no signup and no limit on conversions.
